The art of the fold
Marcy Westphal, Senior Designer
When starting a project, most designers focus on paper, colors, photography and fonts. What they don’t always take into account is the fold. But a simple crease in a piece of paper can be magical if done correctly.
Remember when you were a kid and had pop-up books, fortune tellers, paper stars and airplanes? Those would not have been nearly as fun with out the indicate folds, right? Somewhere along the way we lost some of the art of the fold. However, it’s making a comeback (it’s not just for origami anymore)!
The right finishing can take your project from ordinary to extraordinary. It is a way to add depth and dimension to your design collateral without adding a lot of extra expense. Just remember to think about this step at the beginning of your project so you can plan for layout changes, etc. Utilize your printer here as well — they can send you folded, finished mock-ups on a preferred paper stock so you can hold your ideas in your own hands.
So, the next time you are looking to add a little extra “oomph” for your brochure, try adding in a fold (or two, or three…)! You might be surprised at what unfolds. Check out one of our favorite websites for fold inspiration (www.foldfactory.com) here and get to creasin’!
