Achieving harmony with color
Marcy Westphal, Senior Designer
Have you ever struggled with matching colors in your designing, decorating or even dressing?
It happens to the best of us. Yes, even designers get caught up in the battle of color. Let’s be honest, color coordinating can be down-right difficult. What are the latest trends? How will others react to my color choices? These questions and many others run through our heads at the start of every project. Whether we are designing a logo or picking out paint chips, our color choices affect us in countless ways—mentally and physically. Psychologists have suggested that color impression can account for 60% of the acceptance or rejection of a product or service. Simply put, color choice(s) should never be neglected! A bad color combo can have the same negative impact as poorly-written content or a sub-par design. And no one wants something as simple as color choice to negate their hard work.
Thankfully, there are some easy guides to help you select the right color combinations for your next project (or outfit). Take a look at this handy info graph from KISSmetric—it explains the use of a simple color wheel as well as more in-depth wheels that help illustrate color harmonies and schemes. Remember, color is your friend! It can be your most powerful design element IF you learn to use it effectively.
So, get out there and spin that color wheel! Be adventurous with your next project, but most importantly, have fun!
